RESUMO

Currently, the modeling of complex chemical-physical processes is drastically influencing industrial development. Therefore, the analysis and study of the combustion process of the boilers using machine learning (ML) techniques are vital to increase the efficiency with which this equipment operates and reduce the pollution load they contribute to the environment. This work aims to predict the emissions of CO, CO2, NOx, and the temperature of the exhaust gases of industrial boilers from real data. Different ML algorithms for regression analysis are discussed. The following are input variables: ambient temperature, working pressure, steam production, and the type of fuel used in around 20 industrial boilers. Each boiler's emission data was collected using a TESTO 350 Combustion Gas Analyzer. The modeling, with a machine learning approach using the Gradient Boosting Regression algorithm, showed better performance in the predictions made on the test data, outperforming all other models studied. It was achieved with predicted values showing a mean absolute error of 0.51 and a coefficient of determination of 99.80%. Different regression models (DNN, MLR, RFR, GBR) were compared to select the most optimal. Compared to models based on Linear Regression, the DNN model has better prediction performance. The proposed model provides a new method to predict CO2, CO, NOx emissions, and exhaust gas outlet temperature.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Loxoscelism is an important public health problem in Chile and South America, due to the higher rate of cutaneous-visceral involvement. The diagnosis of loxoscelism is mostly clinical without established diagnostic criteria. There is little evidence to support any treatment used in this condition. AIM: To characterize the clinical features and epidemiology of loxoscelism among patients consulting at the Emergency and Dermatology Services of a clinical hospital between 2013 and 2017. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Review of medical records of patients registered in the electronic clinical record system with a confirmed diagnosis of loxoscelism. Epidemiological, clinical, laboratory tests and treatment variables were analyzed. RESULTS: We reviewed data from 200 patients. Ninety-four percent presented cutaneous loxoscelism and 5.5% cutaneous-visceral loxoscelism. Systemic symptoms were present in 73% of patients with cutaneous-visceral loxoscelism. Patients who developed systemic symptoms had an 18 times higher risk of developing cutaneous-visceral loxoscelism. Laboratory abnormalities were more common in patients with cutaneous-visceral loxoscelism. Not all patients with hematuria had cutaneous-visceral loxoscelism. Most patients required analgesia. Anti-loxosceles serum was not used in any patient. CONCLUSIONS: Many questions remain to be answered regarding the diagnosis and treatment of the disease. Studies are required to validate diagnostic criteria for loxoscelism, predictors for visceral involvement and response to treatment.

INTRODUCCTION: Syringomas are common benign tumors, probably of origin derived from the intraepidermal portion of the eccrine sweat ducts. Occasionally they may develop suddenly and extensively as eruptive syringomas or be located in atypical sites delaying the diagnosis for years. Dermoscopy has an incipient role in differentiating syringomas from their extensive differential diagnosis. METHODS: Retrospective descriptive case-series study of atypical location syringomas. Data extraction from clinical history from electronic files. They all include dermoscopy and histopathological correlation. RESULTS: Five patients: Four men and one woman between 40 and 79 years old, with atypical syringomas diagnosis: four eruptive and one vulvar syringomas. DISCUSSION: We propose dermoscopy, based on our findings, as a useful tool to this entity, with its oval yellow structures and a diffuse light-brown network-like structure on its surface. These yellow enlargements may be correlated with the ductal eccrine proliferation and the dense stroma seen in the histopathology. CONCLUSION: We emphasize that they should be considered in the differential diagnosis of papular dermatosis, as they tend to be underdiagnosed, and to know their clinical manifestations to optimize the diagnostic suspicion.

RESUMO

The subcommissural organ (SCO) is an ancient and conserved brain gland secreting into cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) glycoproteins that form the Reissner fiber (RF). The present investigation was designed to further investigate the dynamic of the biosynthetic process of RF glycoproteins prior and after their release into the CSF, to identify the RF proteome and N-glycome and to clarify the mechanism of assembly of RF glycoproteins. Various methodological approaches were used: biosynthetic labelling injecting 35S-cysteine and 3H-galactose into the CSF, injection of antibodies against galectin-1 into the cerebrospinal fluid, light and electron microscopical methods; isolated bovine RF was used for proteome analyses by mass spectrometry and glycome analysis by xCGE-LIF. The biosynthetic labelling study further supported that a small pool of SCO-spondin molecules rapidly enter the secretory pathways after its synthesis, while most of the SCO-spondin molecules are stored in the rough endoplasmic reticulum for hours or days before entering the secretory pathway and being released to assemble into RF. The proteomic analysis of RF revealed clusterin and galectin-1 as partners of SCO-spondin; the in vivo use of anti-galectin-1 showed that this lectin is essential for the assembly of RF. Galectin-1 is not secreted by the SCO but evidence was obtained that it would be secreted by multiciliated ependymal cells lying close to the SCO. Further, a surprising variety and complexity of glycan structures were identified in the RF N-glycome that further expands the potential functions of RF to a level not previously envisaged. A model of the macromolecular organization of Reissner fiber is proposed.

In order to qualitatively evaluate sexual behaviors or practices and the incidence of sexual and reproductive health programs in adolescent and postadolescent users educated in Cali, Colombia, two quota samples were carried out, one in schools in poor neighborhoods of the city and one at Valle University (UNIVALLE). In addition, a limited number of twelve open interviews was made among two different student population groups, the schools and the university. The study addresses the sexual behaviors of adolescents and postadolescents, contraceptive methods and prevention of STDs and HIV/AIDS, and the uses of sexual and reproductive health programs by both populations, controlling for social class (socioeconomic stratum), gender, and race. Two sexual and reproductive health programs were taken as reference: that of PROFAMILIA (Pro-Wellbeing of the Colombian Family Association), and the sexual and reproductive health program of the University Medical Service of the UNIVALLE. Results show how the behaviors and responses to sexual and reproductive health programs are mediated by multiple sociological categories that orient the analysis.
